Asylum Meuse Campaign Complete: 176% funded

It's all over, and thanks to your help the Asylum Meuse was an absolute success.

Not only did we meet the campaign goal, but we exceeded it by about $30k. In the closing week of the campaign, we sold 15 bikes. That's right, 15 bikes! This was quite the accomplishment. We could not have done this without your help. A big thank you to all of our backers.

The final count? With 150 pledges, we raised $70,580. This means we reached 176% of the campaign funding goal.

We really can't say the following enough. Thanks to all of our backers for supporting us financially and helping spread the word. Without your efforts, we would've had to start from scratch. Thankfully, that’s not the case and we get to start making some cyclocross bikes.

What now? Well, as promised, we entered the pre-order phase as soon as the campaign ended. This means people can still claim a Meuse for a special price on Crowd Supply until the first round of bikes arrive in October.

In case you know someone who'd be interested in pre-ordering a Meuse, here's the breakdown on pricing:

Frame, Fork, Headset- $995.00 SSCX Complete- $1795.00 Race-Ready w/SRAM Force- $2295.00 Rogue Team edition- $2795.00

Also, if you haven't already, check out the Meuse SSCX photos we had featured on Cycle Exif.

We'll be in touch with production updates as they become available. For the most up-to-date info, keep in touch with us on Facebook and Twitter.

All the best, Patrick w/Asylum

The final countdown.

We've made it to the last day of the campaign. I can't believe that the first chapter of our journey is nearly complete.

Thank you to everyone who's shared the journey with us so far. Throughout this project, we've learned a lot about what people are looking for in their next bike, how to crowdfund a new company, and we met a lot of interesting people in the process.

Thank you for your enthusiasm for the Meuse and our dream of a better bike company. Thanks for your words of encouragement, your helpful suggestions, and ultimately for your willingness to take the leap and join up with Asylum Cycles from day 1. You have been great spokespeople for us already, and we hope that you'll continue spreading the good word in the months and years to come. We want to create the kind of community around our fledgling company that will allow us to deliver exactly the kind of bikes the most passionate of riders want to own. With your help and encouragement, Asylum can be the mouse that roars.

When I was younger, I remember getting my first Yeti mountain bike. After a few years, I attended their yearly customer-appreciation weekend. That was a special moment for me as it was the first time I felt truly connected to a company that shared the same passion for two wheels that I did. That is a special bond, and the kind of bond we're hoping to develop with all of our supporters as we grow. Our campaign on Crowd Supply has been one part of this process.

Moving forward, Asylum wants you to know that you will have our ear as we continue to develop new products and refine existing models. Believe us when we say there is something beyond cool in the works for our next project.

As to these final few hours, please encourage people to back our project. Until midnight tonight (PST), people still have the ability to get an Asylum for an unbeatable deal. The more bikes we get pre-ordered, the better our relationship gets with the factory we're using. This will benefit our company in the long-run.

How many bikes do you think we can get under-the-wire?

We couldn't have gotten here without your support.

Thanks, Patrick w/Asylum

We made it!

As you're probably aware, we made it.

With your support, enthusiasm, and financial backing, the Asylum Meuse became a reality as we exceeded our crowdfunding target.

So, what's next?

First of all, there are still 5 days left in the campaign. That means that people still have the ability to get a Meuse at the special, crowdfunding campaign price. The more we overfund the, the better-equipped Asylum will be as a brand new bike company. Remember, after the 18th, prices are going up as we enter pre-order phase. Regarding payment fulfillment. We'll be running credit card transactions this week. Finally, we wanted to share a link to an article on Cyclocross Magazine's website. Note the last bit about Jonathan Page's cyclocross bike geometry. You can expect to see the Meuse getting some significant coverage this fall when they review our Team Rogue Edition in the print version of their publication.

We'll continue to keep our backers updated on the project's progress as we begin the production process.

Thank you so much for all of your support and stay tuned for more.

One bike to go!

As of writing this post, we only need one more person to back a complete Meuse to reach our funding target. Be it a single-speed, a geared edition, or our Team Rogue, any one of these will tip us over the edge.

We couldn't have gotten here without you. Help spread the word and bring us over the line!

$1,010.00 remaining. We can do this!

very best,

Patrick w/Asylum

Asylum needs your help in the final week and a half

As testament to the Meuse's exceptional value during the crowdfunding period, we wanted to share what a backer recently posted on Facebook:

"I had been looking at comparable bikes for awhile now, and you cannot get anything close to what the Meuse has to offer, as far as components, let alone a carbon frame. Other bikes at this price point offer an aluminum frame with inferior groups. I can't wait to get my Team edition!"

We believe that more people will end up saying the exact same thing the more they hear about the Meuse.

With 12 days go, we are 86% funded. This next week and a half is critical to the project's success. We can't make it all of the way without the support of our backers. If you haven't already, please spread the word to your fellow cyclists, post links to the product page on your favorite blog or even your Facebook feed. Think about contacting your local racing scene's mailing list. Let them know why you're supporting Asylum and why this is such an exciting opportunity. Backers get a seat at the table for future product development and as thanks for their support, we set them up with an incredible price on the Meuse.

Remember, until May 18th, everyone has the ability to get a Meuse for wholesale. If we successfully fund the bike, prices are set to increase by 10% after the 18th.

We're close, but we still have some ground to cover.

Help pull us over the line by spreading the word and encouraging people to make the leap to Asylum.

We can't do it without you,

Patrick w/Asylum

85% there + more press for the Meuse

The Meuse continues to impress. We've just hit the 85% funded mark. Thank you to all of our spectacular backers.

We're also receiving a fair amount of press. Joe Parkin, a legend in his own right, did a nice write-up on our Asylum Meuse Rogue edition on the Paved Magazine website. On Monday, Frank Peters of CDM Cyclist, featured an interview with the Meuse's product manager, Patrick Croasdaile. In addition to discussing the Meuse, Patrick did a great job explaining how Crowd Supply's crowdfunding platform is the perfect match for projects in the cycling industry. You can listen to the interview here.

We're almost there. Help pull us over the line by plugging the Meuse with your local racing scene's mailing list, hitting up your friends in cycling clubs and teams, and posting some pictures of the bike on your Facebook feed.

Your support means the world to us and brings us closer to reality by the day.

Over 70% funded

Full Steam Ahead

Things are really moving at full speed now. We're over 70% funded and we couldn't have done it without your support.

Meuse in the wild

We just got back from Sea Otter where we had the pleasure of showing the Meuse off to the American bicycling public at large. In addition to racing it, our man Dan got the Meuse in front of a lot of people, and even had some time to hit the trails.

Kyle from King

By and large people really like the frame's appearance, its incredibly low weight, and lively feel on the road and trail. Also, there aren't too many other full-carbon disc 'cross bikes that can boast single speed and geared compatibility.

We have 25 days to get the Meuse fully-funded, your support in these final weeks is critical to the project's success. Consider posting a link to the product-page on your Facebook and Twitter Feeds, telling your friends and family who ride, and giving us a shout out on your favorite cycling blog or Tumblr feed.

We can only make the Meuse successful with your help,

Patrick

Live from Sea Otter

We sent one of our team members, Dan, down to Sea Otter to show off the Meuse, race it, and get people to try it out. By all accounts, the Meuse is making an impression with the locals...

Stay tuned for more from Dan the Man at Sea Otter.

Introducing the Meuse to Rogue

Team Photo 2

Yesterday was a big day for Asylum Cycles. We unveiled the Meuse, in all of its glory, to not only the public at large, but also Rogue Ales and their cycling team. And what better place to do it than the Rogue Ales Public House in the Pearl District?

We made the most out of the opportunity. In addition to chatting with key-members of Rogue's management, principally their CEO, we also got to taste a number of Rogue's fine ales, a highlight for sure. The Rogue team was stoked on how the bike turned out and can't wait to get their hands on it for next 'cross season. We made quite the impression on the public at large as well. Attendees were impressed with the Meuse's low-weight, stylish graphics, and overall build-quality.

Prior to the party at we also received our final concept work on the Meuse in its regular colors. Working with Graham and Shawn at Ruckus Composites, we've been able to nail down the details of how our graphics will look on the production models.

Asylum Frame

The crew at Western Bikeworks, the shop where you can test ride the Meuse, did us a solid by getting the single-speed version up and running for the event at Rogue.

Asylum SSCX

By all accounts, the Meuse was very well received and we believe this was exactly the sort of event that will bring great success to the project.

Thank you to everyone who came to the event at Rogue. Also, a big thanks to everyone who has helped so far, we couldn't have made it here without you.

-The Asylum Team

Over 50% funded!

We are proud to announce that the Meuse is over 50% funded. With 33 days to go, things are looking great!

On Tuesday, the Asylum team will present its Team Rogue edition to the CEO of Rogue Ales and their cyclocross team at the Rogue Ales Public House in Portland. Pictures to follow.

Stay tuned for more.

Riding the Meuse at the Rickreall Gravel Classic

Handlebars

Gravel grinding has become the new wave of adventure cycling in the Pacific Northwest. Nothing else quite unifies the various sub-cultures of cycling like a long day in the saddle on empty roads in the middle of nowhere. We designed the Meuse with exactly this kind of riding in mind.

Gravel Roads

This past weekend, the Asylum crew went down south for the 1st annual Rickreall Gravel Classic, put on by the one and only Jason Britton. We've been looking forward to this event since it was first announced at the conclusion of the 'Cross season. Luckily for us, we had our Meuse prototype on-hand. While we've had a chance to put the Meuse through the typical "sea" trials, this was the first time we'd been able to take it out and show it off in public.

Course Parcours

Rickreall's parcours called for a versatile bike to traverse the 80 miles and 6500 feet of climbing on hand. Around 30 miles of this distance was spent on chunky gravel "roads" that snaked their way through Oregon's timber country. The route was so remote that our GPS lost its signal about 15 miles into the ride. The Meuse was the perfect choice for this kind of ride: confident, stout and stable when the road conditions became rough. We were very pleased with how the Meuse maintained speed on the paved sections. A lot of 'Cross bikes opt for a high-bottom bracket, which leaves the rider with a floating in the air sensation. With the Meuse, we kept bottom bracket height perfect for sketchy corners, but low enough for the rider to really carve into corners. This design feature is most noticeable on descents.

Tire choice was a key consideration in the lead-up to Rickreall. We opted for slick 700x28mm tires. Considering how much it rained, however, we probably should have stuck with our Michelin Muds (700x30mm CX tires). Regardless, the 28s held up just fine, didn't flat, and were a real pleasure the few times we found ourselves riding the pavement.

While gravel rides are not officially sanctioned races, there is an unwritten competitive code. Whatever pace you want to ride, you will have no trouble finding others around you who want to match it.

Patrick on the Road

About 5 miles in and the heavens opened up. Downpour style and just in time for the first climb up Orchard Knobb road (Patrick managed a 6th place finish on this particular Strava segment). Following a wet descent, we made our way onto some unnamed logging road and began a long, steady climb on some of the roughest gravel I've seen. This is where our GPS cut out. As we climbed, the rain softened up the earth quite a bit and the gravel turned into this cement-like surface. This is where we wished we'd left the 'Cross tires on.

Patrick Climbing

It was very pretty the whole way up and onto Socialist Valley Road. We passed by Aaron Mercer Reservoir and eventually made it by the wonder that is Black Rock trail. Definitely need to come back to ride the trails. Then began a slick and wild descent down Socialist Valley Road into the town of Falls City. This was certainly a highlight.

Okay, now it's time for a confession. We didn't finish the entire ride. It's embarrassing to admit it, but it's true nonetheless. The weather was just too terrible. Mind you, that's an Oregonian owning up to it. After completing the first section of wilderness-grade gravel just before Falls City, we decided to pack it in and head for the car. The rest of the ride was spent hauling ass on some of Oregon's finest country roads. We are truly spoiled by the variety of riding we have.

Oh, right. How'd the bike hold up? Excellently, of course. We were very impressed with how fast the bike accelerates on pavement once you throw some slick tires on it. It sprints well and maintains speed with minimal effort. On technical terrain, the bike really shines. When we descended Socialist Valley Road, we had to be very mindful because of how slick and muddy it was on top of the tree trunks strewn everywhere. The Meuse was definitely up to the challenge and handled very reassuringly. The disc brakes gave us quite the handling advantage. We really put a nice bike together with the Meuse, and we're looking forward to shaking it down some more throughout the spring.

Heck, it's never too early to start training for 'Cross season.

Race-ready, full-carbon cyclocross bike with powerful disc brakes

Asylum Cycles is crowdfunding the ultimate race-ready carbon ‘cross bike in terms of terrain capabilities, weight, handling and value. With a Belgian river as its namesake, the Meuse brings all the best performance features together: a high-modulus carbon frame, stiff PF30 bottom bracket shell easily compatible with both geared and single-speed use, stiff tapered head tube, 135mm rear axle spacing, and molded-in chainstay disc brake mounts that actually strengthen the rear triangle. The geometry of the Meuse creates an incredibly fast racing bike that’s also at home on long distance adventure rides. Fast, durable and light, the Meuse goes anywhere.

Our mission is to build bikes that people love to ride. That means treating our customers like design partners, bringing riders and racers into the design process and listening to each piece of feedback. That's our simple formula to create the best bikes for the best price. We’ve tested and refined our prototypes creating a great support-team for our customers in the process. Now we’re seeking funding to place a production order and pay for the tooling needed to make additional frame sizes.

What kind of bike is the Meuse?

What if you could have just one bike? The kind of bike that’s perfect for endless gravel roads, rolling hills in the countryside, commuting to work on crowded city-streets, suburban bike paths, misty mountain tops, picnics along a riverside path, muddy races in the fall, single-track trails in the woods, and quick enough to handle the Saturday morning world championship ride at your local bike shop.

Paved or unpaved

The bike would need to be light and stiff, responsive and durable. It would need to be able to accommodate a variety of different tires: nobbies, slicks, fatties. It would need disc brakes for the best stopping power in all conditions. It would also need to be affordable.

Asylum Cycles is making this wünder-bike possible through the release of its Meuse on Crowd Supply.

What separates the Meuse from other bikes?

The Meuse combines all the features you would expect to find on a top-flight road bicycle with the added capabilities of a cyclocross bike.

For the uninitiated, cyclocross bikes are very similar in appearance to traditional road bicycles. Cyclocross bikes add a level of versatility usually associated with that of a mountain bike. The term “cyclocross” refers to a discipline of bicycle racing whereby participants complete circuits on mixed-terrain for 45 minutes to an hour. The racing is very fast-paced and usually takes place on farms, fairgrounds, schoolyards, virtually anywhere that organizers can draw-up a mile and a half lap with a mix of pavement, dirt, sand, mud, gravel, etc. At designated areas on the course, participants must dismount and clear a series of barriers on foot, carrying—or shouldering—their bicycle in the process. As a result, in addition to being stout enough to take the beating of off-road riding, cyclocross bikes must be incredibly light, helping reduce the toll of continued portage throughout the course of a race.

The sport has given birth to a classification of bicycle that utilizes drop-bar handlebars, 700c wheels, and enough clearance to handle larger-width tires with nobs/tread (usually measuring 700x28-35mm).

The bike’s geometry allows for more stable handling over rough-terrain and the bottom bracket sits slightly higher to prevent pedal strikes. Cyclocross bikes also make for great commuters as well. The frame’s tire clearance allows for the easy addition of clip-on fenders on those incredibly wet days.

Meuse complete

The Asylum Meuse is a new-take on the Cyclocross platform. The frame is incredibly durable, yet light and stiff. Our Powerflow design strengthens the down-tube and increases overall rear-end stiffness.

Powerflow

This design feature gives the Meuse an incredibly efficient power-transfer and means you get the most out of each pedal stroke. We’ve made the bike as fast as possible without compromising comfort. That’s really the beauty of carbon fiber. You get the best of both worlds: extremely lightweight and stiff, yet incredibly comfortable and durable.

The Meuse makes great use of the best braking system possible: disc brakes.

disc brakes

Since the world-governing body of professional cycling—the UCI—allowed the introduction of disc brakes on cyclocross bikes, the industry has gone rabid with excitement. Nothing else comes close the sheer stopping-power, modulation ability, and overall performance of discs. This performance advantage is particularly noticeable in wet conditions and on loose surfaces.

The rear-hub spacing on the Meuse is 135mm, the standard measurement for most mountain bike hubs.

rear hub

Because disc-brakes are a relatively new addition to road “styled” bikes, we opted for mountain spacing (135mm) in the rear to give you the most wheel build options possible.

Discs also mean that the Meuse is future-proofed. Since the introduction of disc brakes to the international cyclocross racing circuit, industry players have stepped up their designs. While most “road-style” disc brake bikes are limited to cable-pull set-ups, a number of component manufacturers are developing hydraulic systems for production release in the near future.

With the bicycle industry’s adoption of disc brakes, traditional cable-pull disc brakes have gotten better as well. We’re offering the Meuse with three different types of cable-pull disc brakes, each of which is a superior to the highest-grade caliper/cantilever brake you would find on traditional road/cyclocross bikes. From the Avid BB5s we’ve spec’ed on the SSCX to the Avid BB7SLs on the Rogue Team edition, you’ll have enough stopping power for whatever riding you’re looking to do.

The Meuse works perfectly as a geared bike or as a single-speed. Our oversized bottom bracket shell allows you to choose either way. Utilizing a Problem Solvers bottom bracket, you can set the Meuse up as the ultimate disc brake single-speed bike. Similarly, if you opt to buy the bike built up with gears, you can always switch to a single-speed geared setup down the road, or vice versa.

Our complete build options come equipped with a Stan’s No Tubes ZTR Iron Cross wheelset. You will not find a better tubeless wheelset on the market. Tubeless wheels allow you to play with tire-pressure more, which improves overall grip and handling. Tubeless wheelsets are also considerably lighter and accelerate quickly with less rotational weight. You might be wondering, “what about flats?” A properly set-up tubless wheelset has a “self-healing” system whereby the sealant fills any and all punctures. Of course, it’s always good to ride with an extra tube in case something unexpected happens. While we’re shipping the bike with a set of tubes equipped, you can easily convert to tubeless. Remove the tubes and add some sealant.

Whether you’re looking to get a new bike to ride on the weekends, commute to work on an incredibly light bike, or planning on racing in your local cyclocross series, the Meuse will prove a trusty companion.

Why are you offering the bike on Crowd Supply?

Asylum Cycles is using Crowd Supply to provide a more collaborative approach to the introduction of new bikes, involving racers, cycling enthusiasts and other potential customers in the design process from the very beginning. Using input from those riders and racers, Asylum Cycles has refined and tested prototypes of the Meuse.

Now that the Meuse is ready for release to production, Asylum is seeking backers to aggregate a large order so it can deliver its first bikes at the lowest possible prices.  Our mission is to welcome customers into the design process to help us create the best bikes at the best prices. Crowd Supply is the perfect partner to create long-term relationships with the people riding

Premiums & Pledge Levels

Asylum is offering the Meuse in four configurations. Our Frame Only option is most attractive to experienced cyclists who already have a component group set for use on a new frame or want the freedom of customizing their own specification. The Single Speed edition is the perfect combination of simplicity and high performance and is ideal for the rider looking for a bike with minimal maintenance. The Geared edition with SRAM Force is race-ready for a season full of mud and cowbells. Finally, our Rogue Team Edition is the most premium offering of the Meuse: a complete SRAM Force component group with upgraded brakes and an upgraded cockpit.

Cyclocross and beer go virtually hand in hand. We knew that if we were going to do a brewery-themed bike, there was only one company for us to work with on this project: Rogue Ales of Newport, OR. Paying homage to a brewery as legendary as Rogue meant that we needed to step-up the build-kit on this edition of the Meuse. Complete with a custom Rogue team paint job, we set the bike up with a full-compliment of SRAM Force components, upgraded the cockpit and seat post and gave it the best disc-brakes available to date: the Avid BB7SLs. At this pledge level, you will receive an Asylum Meuse Rogue Team Edition equipped with the following kit:

  • Ritchey WCS Logic Curve Handlebars
  • Thomson Elite X2 Road Stem
  • Thomson Elite Seatpost
  • Selle Italia SL XC Saddle
  • Stan's Iron Cross Wheelset with Michelin MUD 2 tires
  • SRAM Force 46/36 Crankset
  • SRAM Force Gruppo
  • Avid BB7SL w/ 160mm Rotors

Asylum Meuse Rogue Team Edition

Manufacturing Plan

We created a partnership with suppliers and manufacturers that have demonstrated the ability to consistently delivery high-quality product who were eager and open to helping us launch Asylum. Utilizing our own concept and list of features, we received our first prototypes. From these initial prototypes, we gathered input from our test-team to make needed adjustments to the frame's design. This was conducted both on- and off-road, in competitive/racing environments, and long-hours in the saddle. Through this process we finalized the Meuse's design and are now awaiting the delivery of our first production models. These frames are scheduled to arrive in October.

Risks & Challenges

The challenges are distinguishing the product's quality to deliver something high-performance and unique. There already exists a crowded cyclocross market with established brands, but we have developed a list of features not easily found or combined among the current offerings. Asylum is focused and dedicated to using disc-brakes. We have put a priority on creating a bike that allows for options, both in terms of specification (single-speed or geared) and intended use (on- or off-road riding).
