The Dumpster Fire: A Reflow Soldering Hotplate on a Budget

Demo (Attended)
Location

Main Hall

I recently ordered PCBs for a small logic analyzer project through PCBWay. To reduce costs, I opted out of assembly — but that meant I was facing a pile of 11 boards covered in 0402-sized components. While I was open to learning microsoldering, the idea of hand-soldering that many tiny resistors and capacitors wasn’t practical. A friend suggested I look into reflow soldering, and that sent me down the rabbit hole.

Instead of using a full pick-and-place setup, I decided to modify an electronics repair hot plate. For about $150 total (including the hotplate), I converted it into a reflow soldering station capable of following a proper thermal profile. It doesn’t place parts for me, but it heats and reflows reliably.

It probably took me longer to build the tool than it would have taken to hand solder the boards — but the experience was incredibly rewarding, and now I get to share that journey and the working reflow rig with the community.
