Talk Track One
Over the past three years, I’ve been working on Game Bub, an open-source FPGA emulation handheld with Game Boy and Game Boy Advance support. I’ll discuss how I ended up starting this project, the challenges I faced working on it, and how I conquered scope creep by turning it into a feature.
Prior to working on Game Bub, I had a software engineering background, but no FPGA, electrical engineering, or product design experience. I’ll be sharing lessons I’ve learned and tips for getting started.
I’ll also discuss the role of FPGAs in video game preservation. In the past few years, there’s been a surge of hype around FPGA emulation, and with it, misleading marketing and false claims. I’ll talk about myth vs. fact, where Game Bub fits in, and the value of open-source software and hardware.
