Things are moving forward on delivering Bela Gem to you! Here’s a brief run-down of what we have been up to:

Pre-Production Prototypes Under Evaluation

We’ve now received the pre-production Bela Gem units and are thoroughly testing every aspect of their design. So far, things are looking really good. As is often the case with hardware projects, the most challenging elements aren’t the complex electronics, but the mechanical and interface details. For example, we’re currently fine-tuning our custom-made headers to ensure that the mechanical stack-up is as compact as possible while maintaining a rock-solid electrical connection.

These prototypes will be sent out to a small group of seasoned Bela users in the next few days who will be putting the new boards through their paces as part of our beta testing program. With all major hardware issues resolved and testing moving onto finer details of the software, the end goal is clearly in sight. We expect to begin manufacturing the production batch in the next week or two.

Firmware and IDE Development

Firmware and IDE work is also progressing steadily. We’ve got a working image with the new IDE up and running and, though a few of the new components are still to come, it’s ready to be tested in the wild. Early results on the PocketBeagle 2 have been fantastic, with the new processor’s performance opening up exciting new possibilities. We’ve been amazed at what we can achieve when pushing the board to its limits.

Packaging Progress

We’ve also just received the first samples of the packaging for the boards and they look promising. Our focus is on creating something that not only protects the boards during shipping, but also reflects the care and attention that goes into every Bela product. We’re aiming for packaging that’s robust, minimal, and made from recyclable materials wherever possible. A few small adjustments are still needed to fine-tune the fit and finish, but we’re nearly there. With these tweaks, we’ll be ready to lock in the packaging for the production run.
