News Roundup

by Daan P

We haven’t sent any updates in 2025, but that doesn’t mean we have been idle. Walter has traveled to trade shows around the world and, together with you, our users, we have been working on fantastic projects based on the Walter module. We also launched our unified communications library, and the BlueCherry.io platform integration examples have been improved.

Next year, we will continue working on the software, traveling around the world to meet you in person, and developing new tooling to make working with Walter even easier.

We’re Exhibiting at CES Las Vegas 2026!

We’ll be showcasing our latest IoT innovations at CES 2026, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center from January 6–9, 2026.

At our booth, we’ll be demonstrating:

The C64, Now Connected to LTE via Walter

Unlock modern wireless connectivity for your Commodore 64 with this open source expansion card powered by the Walter module. Plugged into the C64 user port via UART, it brings multiple radio connectivity technologies to your retro machine. Now you can log on to your favorite BBS even while sitting in the middle of a park! Unified Communications Library

The Walter-Modem library for Arduino, ESP-IDF, or Micropython makes it easy to use the modem without writing AT commands. The library is designed to get the maximum out of the modem by offloading connectivity and protocols to it. However, switching between cellular and Wi-Fi is less trivial.

That’s why we have released the unified communications library for Walter, built on top of esp-modem. This library uses the modem in PPP mode and runs the protocol stacks on the ESP32-S3, allowing seamless switching between Wi-Fi and cellular. We’re already using the library in multiple scenarios. For example, an e-bike control module that connects to your home Wi-Fi when in range and switches to cellular when on the road. Many other use-cases are possible. Check it out, we’re curious to see how you’ll use the unified communications library.

We Wish You a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

It feels like we wrote the end-of-year newsletter for 2024 only yesterday, but here we are, 2025 is coming to an end. As you can see on the map, the community around Walter has grown tremendously and we cannot thank you enough for your support on this journey.

We’re looking forward to working together in 2026. Hopefully, we can meet in person at one of the events below:

Wishing you joyful holidays and looking forward to building a more connected future together in the New Year!
