Project update 14 of 14

Shipping Progress, Firmware 2.0, and More!

by Trevor R

Hello, everyone!

First I want to extend an apology from our group at Team OffBroadway. We have been spotty with communication and have relied on alternative channels like Discord and Bluesky to give individual updates. We are committed to incremental updates and we are going to start sending monthly updates in July to keep you apprised of firmware, features, and all things FlippyDrive.

We have been working tirelessly to complete fulfill all outstanding FlippyDrive orders. We recently shipped to Crowd Supply’s warehouse enough FlippyDrives to catch up with all orders placed through April 2026. Those units will soon be received into the warehouse and shipped out to backers, probably within the next week or so.

While we have been grinding out production units, I am sure that all of the folks who already have their FlippyDrive are interested in software + firmware updates. These have been delayed due to the load on our team and other real-life changes. However, we are still trending on posting the big 2.0.0 firmware update in a few short weeks. Stay tuned!

This firmware update is going to focus on several quality of life changes. This includes numerous bug fixes along with a few long-awaited UI features. These changes come thanks to the open-source contributions of Ben Hetherington, who is doing great work on cubeboot loader. These features include:

Among other changes and fixes, we have also been working on Ethernet support for online and LAN games. This feature will require changes to Swiss which have not been introduced yet, so there is still some work to do. However, once support is added, we will be archiving and removing our fork of Swiss in favor of using upstream Swiss in our firmware.

I know there is strong interest in Bluetooth controller support. Although we have tested this with the ESP32 and have a working demo, we have decided to delay this feature until after the next big software update so we can focus on Ethernet testing.

Lastly, we have to address the next steps for FlippyDrive! We have several thousand units in the assembly process. We are going to continue prepping units and getting them out into the world as long as stock lasts.

Thank you all for your support and interest, stay tuned for next month’s update!
