The Origin of the Hornet Nest Alarm Panel

The Hornet Nest Alarm Panel started with a simple idea: creating a smart security solution for my own home. While planning for our new home build, I wanted to hardwire every window, door, and water leak sensor in the house—more than 60 zones in total. When I explored existing options specifically designed for alarm panel integration, I found that Konnected was one of the few available solutions.

However, their 12-zone product was priced at $229, and meeting my 60-zone requirement would have required purchasing five boards, leaving no room for future expansion. Moreover, the technology behind Konnected wasn’t particularly unique; many DIY enthusiasts had already built similar solutions using the popular ESP32 platform.

I wanted something different: a solution that was more cost-effective, feature-rich, open-source, and expandable. That vision led me to design the Hornet Nest Alarm Panel as a personal project. Over time, thanks to encouragement from co-workers who are also Home Assistant enthusiasts, I decided to bring this solution to market to help others facing the same challenges.

With funding secured, we’re gearing up for the next phase:

• Production Prep: We’re sourcing materials and preparing for the first manufacturing run.
• Testing & Quality Control: Every unit will undergo rigorous testing to ensure top-tier performance.
