A Quick Guide to Using Diptyx

by Martijn

In this campaign update, we’ll take a look at what it’s like to actually use the Diptyx E-reader.

Finding Books

The first step in using the Diptyx E-reader is uploading your books. Books should be formatted in the EPUB format, a common standard for ebooks. There are multiple ways to obtain EPUBs: The simplest way is to purchase them from ebook stores, just make sure they are provided as EPUB. Secondly, project Gutenberg provides a vast library of ebooks whose copyright has expired. And lastly, there is a variety of tools that can be used to convert files that you already have into the EPUB format.

Uploading Books

Uploading books is a very simple process. You start by connecting the e-reader to your pc/tablet/phone with a USB type-C cable. This will wake-up the e-reader and will show a notification asking you to either charge the device or transfer files. By clicking the right button, the reader enters file transfer mode and will show up as a mass storage device. Now, on your host device, you can drag and drop your EPUB files to the root folder of the Diptyx E-reader. When you’re done, eject the e-reader and simply unplug the USB cable. The e-reader will automatically reboot to load your newly uploaded books.

Your books will show up in the library tab of the general menu, books are sorted by author. Using the buttons to navigate through the menu, you can open a book and start reading. Newly uploaded books are not yet indexed, which will show as a ?/? for the page count. The first time you open a book, or after changing the rendering settings, the book will first be indexed, meaning the e-reader program will walk through the entire EPUB file to determine the total amount of pages in the book. After indexing, your reading progress and the total number of pages will be shown under the book title.

Reading

When reading, the left and right buttons simply open the previous or the next page. Pressing the middle button exits the reading mode and returns to the library menu. By pressing the down button, you place or remove a bookmark on the current pages. When a bookmark is present on the current pages, a black corner is shown in the top-right, as if the corner of the page is folded. Bookmarks can be used to mark pages of interest, such as important plot points, character descriptions, etc. You can quickly navigate through your bookmarks in the quick menu, which can be opened by pressing the up button.

The Quick Menu

The quick menu allows some convenient actions during reading. The menu is opened with the up button, navigated with the left and right buttons, and closed with the down button. The following actions are currently available in the quick menu:

Device Settings

The device settings can be opened from the general menu. Here, you can change the settings pertaining to the rendering of books and general functions of the device. The following settings are currently available:
