Hey Backers,
Just a quick update to say thanks to everyone who has supported the campaign. We should start placing orders for materials soon. I also wanted to give an update and a little information about where things are and where they will go.
We’ve gotten the refresh rate up to 75 hz with 10-bit color. This is basically the bandwidth limit of the MIPI interface on the Steam Deck. Configured for 8-bit color, the max stable refresh rate is 80 hz. The 5 hz difference is not worth the tradeoff in color depth and omitting the HDR metadata, so this is where DeckSight will settle for now. The current BIOS is setup for 60 hz and 75 hz resolutions with 10-bit color. 75 hz is shown in the Steam UI as well as the desktop.
While the Steam Deck’s EDID is read from the BIOS, people who like to tinker can probably figure out how to get a stable 80 hz if running 8-bit color depth, possibly 85 hz, but that would be pushing it. We won’t get into how to do that since it’s likely to cause more headaches than it’s worth, we’re just not saying you can’t do it if you want.
If you’d like more info, visit this page on the Shade Technik website that provides quite a bit more detail than this update.
Regards,
Shade Technik
