ESPHome Driver Changes to Support Home Assistant Integration of Louder

by Andriy

Recent ESPHome changes, specifically deprecation of custom components, prompted the creation of an external TAS5805M DAC ESPHome component. It took some time, but this driver implements a few very important features of the TAS5805M DSP processor that can not only be used in the device configuration, but also in various automations and complex logic.

Key New Features

Advanced digital volume configuration

Set minimum, maximum, and step value.

Automatic powersave modes based on playback state

When not used it barely draws any power at all.

DAC mode

2 channel or 1 channel bridged mode for more power (more details here)

Mixer mode

MONO, STEREO, INVERTED, LEFT, RIGHT (more details here). Very useful if you’re building multi-room configs.

My personal favorite: 15 band equalizer

@ith [-15 dB .. +15 dB] range, which is an absolute treat to configure your speakers to your audio taste

For the first time: read and reset fault states

No need to reboot the device in case of fault. Not only reports them back to HA, but also allows automatic correction. We’re working on an example of how this can be used to back off volume when DAC is overheating.

Possibility to configure Analog Gain

Depending on the power supply you have. More details here.

Future Plans

We have some plans for further development of the ESPHome driver, implementing subwoofer and satellite profiles (for 2.1 and bi-amp configs), enabling soft-clipping, and perhaps even unleashing the power of all BQ-parameters (to enable speaker-specific compensation of the DAC). Stay tuned!

That’s all for this round of updates. We’re excited about where these changes take us — making our devices more powerful, easier to use, and even more fun to experiment with. As always, your feedback and ideas help shape what comes next, so don’t hesitate to get in touch. Until next time, happy building and happy listening.
