Freya Dev Kit is a system dedicated to orchestrating the environmental conditions inside your vivarium, capable of monitoring them through a purpose-built sensor and controlling your equipment through industry-standard outputs. Built around the Raspberry Pi platform, with the freedom to implement your methodology in its foundations.

Freya is open. Open-source code and designs, made with open-source tools—every part of it is yours. Yours to understand, yours to change, and together, to imagine and shape what it becomes. This dev kit is the starting point for an ever-evolving vivarium management experience.

A vivarium is a living world inside an enclosure—a space designed to sustain life by recreating the conditions of a natural environment; plants and animals, warmth and light, in a deliberate harmony. Simple timers and thermostats can go a long way, but Freya takes it where you always felt it could go. It gives you holistic control over the environmental conditions inside your vivarium, orchestrated as one interconnected system.

Made with proven technologies and straightforward design choices, Freya supports your maker instincts as you weave the rhythms of nature into your vivarium. Its purpose-built environmental sensor sits inside the enclosure, helping you keep an eye on conditions like temperature, humidity, and light. An intuitive and easily modifiable control flow shapes how your vivarium behaves, turning sensations into actions, with six output channels for controlling your equipment—heaters, lighting, misting, and more.

Freya’s open architecture means you can understand and modify, and therefore own every part of it. Its modular design allows it to grow organically, on multiple levels. And what makes your vivarium thrive, you can easily share with the community—and they with you.

• A purpose-built Sensor with a high-quality quartz housing, designed to sit inside the enclosure. It is capable of measuring temperature, humidity, visible light, UV spectrum, air quality, and barometric pressure. Connected with I2C through a widely-used connector, making it hardware-compatible with popular breakout ecosystems.
• 6-Channel Equipment Control—heater, lighting, misting, and more, through industry-standard outputs with proportional control capabilities (PWM). Driving your equipment through external intermediary relays, or even directly.
• Readable, adaptable control logic Customizable firmware running on the included Raspberry Pi, built visually with Node-RED. Comes pre-flashed with a circadian rhythm implementation for temperature, humidity, and lighting, configurable through the dashboard.
• An open and modular architecture designed to grow and evolve. Swap a hardware cartridge, drop in a community-built control flow, 3D-print a custom enclosure or upgrade a single board without replacing the whole system. Freya grows organically.
