Hey everyone,
We have a couple more items for update before DeckSight starts shipping, one of which caused another slight delay but it’s a net positive…
HDR is now working in Gamescope, the same way it works on an OLED model Steam Deck. For now, it takes a small workaround to get Gamescope to recognize this ability, but this is handled by the installer. In the future, we will try to submit some integration patches to Gamescope so that DeckSight is more or less "supported". For now, it’s a pretty simple and transparent solution. The result is when in the gaming UI, once a supported HDR title is lauched, HDR becomes available to the game. Once it is selected the UI’s brightness slider now includes an HDR portion. This is exactly how it works in the Steam Deck OLED.
This is the one that caused a bit of a delay. Previously the touchscreen more or less only worked in Linux; Windows would have required a special driver that doesn’t really exist. It comes down to a difference in the way Windows handles devices compared to Linux, which tends to include a bunch of drivers whether you use them or not. After starting to prepare units for shipment we managed to get the "driverless" firmware working on the touch panel. Because this is something that can’t be upgraded after shipment, we sidetracked to do some Windows testing and create the tools to flash the firmware for production. It also required a small change to the BIOS patch.
So the result now is the touch screen "just works" in Linux or Windows. Since the upgrade came just in time before shipment, there aren’t two different versions floating around.
All of the components are in and assembly started nearly two weeks ago but, as mentioned above, it had to be postponed until the new touch screen firmware upgrade was resolved, since the firmware gets upgraded during assembly alongside unit testing. We’ve started back up, but we’re obviously about one to two weeks behind the initial estimate.
We’ll likely be shipping to Mouser about the beginning of next week and we can assume Mouser will start shipping about the end of the month. This will likely be the last update before shipping, possibly we will send one just to say "it shipped", but otherwise the above is what should be expected.
Regards,
Shade Technik
