Put your Raspberry Pi to work: with Anavi Play pHat, you can make it an IoT hub during the day and a retro gaming machine during the night! ANAVI Play pHAT is a super simple, low cost, open source hardware add-on board for Raspberry Pi with buttons for retro gaming and slots for up to three I2C sensor modules.

Inspired by the classic game controllers of the early 80s, ANAVI Play pHAT fits perfectly on top of any Raspberry Pi with a 40-pin header, including the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ and Zero. It runs on Raspbian out of the box, and with our Python script you can use it for playing retro games on RetroPie and EmulationStation. Furthermore, free and open source software examples are provided for reading data from sensors for temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and light.

ANAVI Play pHAT was created by and for free and open source software. It has been certified by the open source hardware association under UID BG000007. All units will be manufactured in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, EU. Both soldering kits and fully assembled units are available.

Each fully assembled kit include a couple of convenient acrylic cases for Raspberry Pi 2/3 or Zero. The cases were designed with the free and open software OpenSCAD. They provide a better gaming experience while maintaining air flow for cooling the Raspberry Pi.

Order any of the available perks, get your hands on the ANAVI Play pHAT, contribute to our GitHub repositories, and become part of our open source community!

Who Needs It and Why?

ANAVI Play pHAT is an excellent low-cost addition for any Raspberry Pi owner interested in retro gaming and home automation. ANAVI Play pHAT is an entirely open source project. Documentation and examples are already available in GitHub.

Thanks to the free and open source project, RetroPie, you can enjoy playing your favorite games from the good old days with more than 30 different emulators using EmulationStation as a front-end.

With ANAVI Play pHAT and Raspberry Pi, you can have hundreds of retro games in your pocket for a minimal budget. Unlike bulky USB gamepads, ANAVI Play pHAT fits on top of your Raspberry Pi and takes little space. During vacations or business trips you can easily take it with your Raspberry Pi in your carry-on baggage and plug them to the TV in your hotel room.

You can also build a weather station with sensors for temperature, humidity, barometric pressure and light. If you need buttons for your home automation project, ANAVI Play pHAT adds eight of them to your Raspberry Pi.

Comparisons

There are plenty of controllers for retrogaming on Raspberry Pi. Although some of them have a better looking and more comfortable joystick and buttons, ANAVI Play pHAT stands out with its slots for plug and play sensors, EEPROM (to work out of the box on Raspbian), certified open source hardware design, and affordable price.

Manufacturing Plan

ANAVI Play pHAT is an open source hardware project powered and created with free and open source software. It has been certified by the Open Source Hardware Association under UID BG000007. The board is designed with the free and open source electronics design automation suite KiCAD. The schematics and the PCB design are available at GitHub under CC BY-SA 4.0 license.

To ensure consistently high quality, ANAVI Play pHAT has a green solder mask and a gold surface finish. All printed circuit boards will be made and assembled at a local factory in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, EU. Apart from the maker kit, all other pledges require manual soldering which is hard and time consumin, so the full assembly boards will be split into several batches. Finally, all boards from each batch will be carefully manually tested on a Raspberry Pi, packaged, and shipped according to the schedule for each pledge.

Shipping & Fulfillment

This crowdfunding campaign offers ANAVI Play pHAT with free worldwide shipping during the crowdfuding and pre-order periods via the registered airmail service of the Bulgarian Post. All orders will be shipped from Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Your pledge will be packaged in an individual cardboard box and padded envelope for extra safety during transport. A tracking number will be provided as soon as the order has been shipped.

Risks & Challenges

ANAVI Play pHAT is a stable, certified, open source hardware product. We have already manufactured a small-run batch to ensure that everything works correctly. Although this significantly reduces any risks, mass production still depends on factories and suppliers. Availability of parts can also be an issue. In order to provide ANAVI pHAT at the best price, we are working with reliable suppliers and a trusted local factory in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

We have experience successfully delivering projects on time and even ahead of schedule from our previous crowdfunding campaigns for ANAVI Infrared pHAT and ANAVI Light pHAT. We are confident that we can again arrange successful mass production on time. However, any unexpected delays will be communicated to backers promptly through regular updates.

Stretch Goals

Our crowdfunding campaign has a very modest goal of just $1, but if we raise:
