“The boards are beautiful”

Cedar Boat Works is a Portland, OR based Stand-Up Paddleboard builder. For about two years, we’ve been focused on designing and perfecting a line of cedar paddles and boards. We build them by hand out of a small workshop in NW Portland. We’re ready to start offering our beautiful wood paddles and boards to a wider audience of SUP enthusiasts, and we’d love to do it at prices that make them accessible to everyone. In order to do that, we need to upgrade our production facilities, which will allow us to produce everything in-house, right here in Portland, at a cost that keeps our products affordable. So we’re looking for your support.

For the Crowd Supply campaign we’re featuring our custom paddles, both as kits and as finished pieces. We also have some special packages featuring our regular stand up paddle board and our yoga board. Although we’ve been selling these in limited quantity already, we’re able to offer them at a discount now, thanks to the projected cost reduction when we build our new workshop. Take a look through the rewards list for details and options.

This is a special opportunity for those already familiar with SUP, and those ready to try something new, to get a first look at some truly beautiful, customizable boards and paddles that stand apart from anything else that’s out there.

What Makes SUP So Great?

If you’re not familiar with stand-up paddle boarding (or SUP, as it is known by fans), this is a great opportunity to give it a try. Stand up paddle boarding has become tremendously popular over the past few years. It’s great exercise, a lot of fun and a great way to enjoy the outdoors. Here are just a few of the many reasons that SUP has become one of the fastest growing recreational activities in the world.

Versatility
Stand up paddle boarding is incredibly versatile. You can do it on lakes, rivers, coastlines and even pools. It’s a sport that is easy to learn and anyone with access to water can get started.

Variety of styles
There are all sorts different ways to enjoy paddle-boarding. Some participate in racing, surfing, river runs and yoga, while others prefer to keep things simple and just enjoy a nice relaxing cruise in the sun.

Great Low Impact Sport
People of all ages are enjoying SUP because it is fun and relaxing, and also provides a low-impact cardio workout that builds and stretches the core, arms, back and legs, without all the pounding and strain of other exercise routines.

Great Group and Family Activity
People are always looking for new ways to have fun with the entire family or with a good group of friends. Stand up Paddle is perfect for that. It’s great for vacations or weekend outings. There are always new clubs sprouting up getting people together for group rides races and yoga classes.

What makes your boards and paddles special?
The boards and paddles are made of all Western Red Cedar construction, making the them beautiful and lightweight, but also strong and durable. Each paddle and board is The kits are engineered to be assembled easily by anyone with some basic tools, and customized to fit each individual.

Each paddle kit comes with everything you need to for DIY assembly: light and dark cedar wood, fiberglass, epoxy, playDoh, guides and templates, as well as a step by step manual. Finished paddles come ready to use out of the box. Customized paddles backers will get a paddle or SUP with specialty wood or their own chosen inlays under the fiberglass.

The instructions can be found here.

Here are some reasons our paddles really stand out:
  • Right length – We can custom size our paddles to fit you
  • Oval shaft – An oval shaft fits best in your hand and offers maximum strength
  • Bend shaft – The blade is bent at 12% which is the optimum angle
  • Blade placement – Placing the blade in the center of the shaft helps create more even strokes.
  • Shaft composition – The paddle must be somewhat flexible to prevent shoulder fatigue, but not so flexible as to waste energy or break. Our paddles use a fiberglass inlay as well as a hardwood center strip to get the near perfect combination of flexibility and strength.
  • Looks great - Our paddles and boards are real wood, feature nice curves, and can be personalized with inlays or decals
  • You built it yourself - If you choose to build one of our kits, you’ll have experience the unique pleasure and satisfaction that comes from taking the time to create something with your hands and love and energy.
What are the benefits of using a kit, vs. buying a completed version?

There are two main benefits of building a board or paddle yourself. The cost is significantly less, and you get to be proud of building your own, custom work of art.

On the other hand, buying a finished paddle or board is fast and easy, and you can get out on the water the same day it arrives.

As you can see, we’re incredibly proud of our work. Our boards and paddles are not only well-designed and affordable, but also works of art that you can be proud to show off both on the water and on your wall.

We hope you’ll support our campaign and help us make these beautiful paddles and boards accessible to people all over the world!
