Pathbind Quest is a handheld fantasy adventure built around light, sound, and imagination. There is no screen, no app, and no internet connection required. Instead, Quest uses coloured lights and sound to guide you through a mysterious fantasy world that exists in your imagination. As you travel across ancient lands, you will encounter dangerous creatures, discover magical artifacts, explore forgotten ruins, and slowly uncover the location of the stolen Heart of Erremor.
Inspired by the early era of computer gaming, Pathbind Quest takes you back to when technical limitations left room for you to create a world in your mind. The result is an experience that feels entirely unique. Prepare yourself—the adventure is about to begin!
One of the goals behind Quest was to explore how much gameplay could be created using extremely limited hardware.
The entire game runs on a single 8-bit microcontroller and is controlled using only four buttons, five colored LEDs, and a miniature speaker. Despite these limitations, Quest contains a complete open-world fantasy adventure featuring exploration, inventory management, creature encounters, combat, magical items, world navigation, and a final objective.
Rather than relying on graphics, the game communicates through color, sound, timing, and memory. Players quickly learn to interpret the signals and develop their own mental image of the world around them. Quest demonstrates that engaging gameplay doesn’t need the internet, powerful processors, or a big screen.
At this time, the firmware and game content for Pathbind Quest are closed. We would like to make some of the hardware files available under a permissible license after the campaign, and will revisit this matter based on feedback from the community.
