Project Update · Teardown and Delay

Hi everyone. We have good news, and we have bad news. The bad news is that Fomu will be delayed a couple of weeks due to some PCB manufacturing issues. The good news is that this gave us more time to hold a Fomu workshop at Teardown, which gave us a lot of interesting feedback, including one particular catastrophic bug that we managed to fix due to the production delay. Read on to find out more!

Project Update · Fourth Stretch Goal Complete!

Dear Backers, SDR! SDR! SDR! Software. Defined. Radio. Say it because its fun! A couple weeks ago, the SDR stretch goal loomed like a distant mirage, something we set out there as a true stretch. And yet now, here we are, writing you to inform you that weve met one of our trigger criteria for the stretch goal a minimum of 200 combined units desktop/laptop/heirloom (system-level) units backed. ...

Now that we've had some time to become familiar with Novena, we've seen new and interesting bugs crop up. We've spent time fixing these bugs, and the result is a system that is much more stable.

It is possible to add support for a new OS to the Rust compiler's stable channel without rebuilding everything, enabling libstd support for entirely new operating systems.

Precursor omakase candidates
It’s been a couple months since our last update, in part because the world has been in rapid flux and it’s been a struggle to establish ground truth on a number of production-critical factors. The last time we wrote, the very first doses of the Pfizer vaccine were being administered, while the US Capitol was under assault. Now, about 20% of the US has received at least one dose of a vaccine, and a massive stimulus package is being signed into law. This update covers supply-chain delays, omakase case candidates, Precursor sales in Bitcoin, and a status report on the Xous operating system.

Precursor tracking info
We missed our estimated shipping date by a couple of weeks, but Precursor is finally shipping to backers - more than half of the crowdfunding orders have already shipped and all outstanding orders should be shipped very soon. The global electronics supply chain is still a mess, but we remain undaunted. On the plus side, logistical delays freed up enough time to complete the first pass of a Braille version of Precursor!

Just a quick update from the line in Korea - we've started production of the Precursor PCBAs! Here are some photos of the journey thus far. And, before I forget: you can catch me (bunnie) and xobs on a Crowd Supply Teardown Sessions livestream happening on Wednesday, December 15th, 2021 at 9 PM Pacific. Even better, Crowd Supply is giving away a Precursor. See you there!

I was thinking we'd be light on new features due to the holidays, but I was wrong! Our development community has rallied, and we've got a nice list of compelling improvements in this release.

So, today marks the end of our crowdfunding campaign, and we couldn't be happier with the result! Over 2500 people pledged for a PocketSprite.
