Project Update · Teardown and Delay
0.010
Hi everyone. We have good news, and we have bad news. The bad news is that Fomu will be delayed a couple of weeks due to some PCB manufacturing issues. The good news is that this gave us more time to hold a Fomu workshop at Teardown, which gave us a lot of interesting feedback, including one particular catastrophic bug that we managed to fix due to the production delay. Read on to find out more!

Project Update · Post-Campaign Orders

On August 31st, 2021, I personally handed the last laptop from the crowdfunded first batch of MNT Reforms to its owner in Berlin. This concluded an almost half year marathon of assembling laptops in our studio. My coworkers Greta and Magda did incredible work putting all the parts together, printing components, sewing sleeves, and packaging everything for shipping. We had only a very short break before going into the next phase, which is shipping all the devices ordered after June 18, 2020. We call this the "post-crowdfunding" phase. The orders from this phase will be fulfilled by Crowd Supply/Mouser through their US warehouse, so the process is a bit different for us and we have to solve a different set of formalities before we can ship out the first batch. This is now mostly completed and the first batch of ~40 devices is scheduled to leave our premises in the next couple of weeks. We go into further detail about the shipping schedule, talk about the new firmware update, show off a smoother trackball and more in the rest of this update.

Project Update · Manufacturing & Delivery

Dear Backers, First, a sincere apology for missing our target of shipping Novena mainboards in November. bunnie in particular expresses his regrets for slipping on such a major milestone. However, the good news is we are just a couple of weeks delayed. The material for the mainboards is all in the factory, and first articles have been delivered off of the production line and approved. This week...

Why do we trust our computers? I’ve done a lot of thinking on this question. The answer, it turns out, is that we trust our computers mostly because we have no other choice. Most of us wouldn’t know how to check if a computer is constructed correctly; and those of us who do are overwhelmed by the millions of lines of source code and billions of transistors packed into a typical computer. If you’re like me, this answer is dissatisfying. Precursor is our attempt to help the community develop a better one.

Project Update · More on the Hackable Bezel
0.010
When designing Novena, we had to balance budget against hackability. Plastic parts are cheap to produce, but the tools to mold them are very expensive and difficult to modify. Injection mold tooling cost for a conventional clamshell (two-body) laptop runs upwards of $250,000. In contrast, Novena’s single body design has a much lower tooling cost, making it feasible to amortize tooling costs ove...

Project Update · Xous 0.9.10: Filing off Rough Edges

The development theme for the past two months has been "gloss": things that improve the user experience or clean up technical debt in the code base. Stuff like clearer documentation, performance improvements, working with community developers to pull in staged features, and better CI coverage.

Project Update · Our Mechanical Design

“Pocketability” is the difference between Precursor and naked PCB FPGA development platforms. We hope Precursor’s pocketability helps bring more open hardware out of the lab and into everyday use. Thus, the mechanical design of Precursor is of similar importance to its electrical, software, and security design.

There is plenty of skepticism around the value of hackable products. Significantly, hackability is different from openness: cars are closed-source, yet support vibrant modding communities; gcc is one of the “real OG”s of open source, but few users find it easy to extend or enhance. Is it better to have a garden planted by the most knowledgeable botanists and maintained by experienced gardeners, or an open plot of land maintained by whoever has the interest and time? In this update, we explore these issues in the context of Precursor.
